Raphael Schumacher, 27, was performing in a theatre production in the Italian city of Pisa when the rope tightened around his neck. Schumacher was reportedly wearing a mask for the scene so it was not immediately clear that he was being strangled. But a member of the audience - believed to be a medical graduate - realised something was wrong when the actor started to tremble and rushed to his aid. "The noose should have been fake and a harness should have caught him if he fell - I cannot explain how an incident like this happened," one of Mr Schumacher's colleagues is quoted as saying.
