AUSTRALIANS are demanding the country ditches the Queen in favour of a new head of state.

All but one of Australia’s eight state or territory leaders have signed a declaration calling on Australia to be a Republic by 2020.
Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s monarch since 1952, is also the Queen in Australia.

Former Chief of Army David Morrison, chosen as 2016’s Australian of the Year, used his recognition speech to attack the antipodean nation’s ties with Britain.
He said: "I am a member of the republican movement, I have been a republican all my life. When I was serving in the army, these views were very private.

In 1999 a referendum that would have gotten rid of Queen Elizabeth was comfortably defeated.
